If you’ve been thinking about buying a new mattress, then chances are you’ve come across the term “hybrid mattress” in your research. A hybrid mattress is a very popular option these days because it combines the responsiveness of an innerspring mattress with the contouring of a memory foam mattress. Essentially, it’s like getting the best of both worlds.
Two popular hybrid mattresses on the market are the Saatva
Our innovative memory foam & innerspring hybrid for cooler sleep
and Serta iComfort Hybrid. Both hybrid mattresses are similar in construction, with an individually wrapped coil base and a cooling, contouring memory foam comfort layer. But there are a few key differences between these two memory foam hybrids (and the companies that manufacture them).
Below, we break down the top seven points of differentiation so you can decide which mattress is right for you.
Saatva vs. Serta: key points of comparison
1. Lumbar support
Lumbar support is a crucial feature to look for in a mattress, especially if you’re prone to back pain. It refers to anything that provides extra support to your lower back.
The Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid has a gel-infused memory foam lumbar crown that works with the patented Lumbar Zone® Quilting above it to give you extra support and durability in the middle of the mattress where you need it most.
The Serta iComfort Hybrid doesn’t have any added lumbar support in the center of the mattress.
2. Cooling features
Traditional memory foam tends to sleep hot, which is why any good mattress that contains memory foam today will feature advanced cooling technology.
The Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid has a layer of AirCradle memory foam, which has a unique wave design to help circulate internal airflow through “air pockets” under the foam. This layer gives the mattress its deep, body-contouring feel. What’s more, Saatva uses premium 4-lb. memory foam for pressure-relieving support and long-lasting durability.
The Serta iComfort Hybrid has a layer of what the brand calls Carbon Fiber memory foam, which helps move heat away from the body and provide pressure relief. Serta also offers a variety of cooling upgrades to its iComfort Hybrid for an additional cost. The upgraded mattress models contain other types of memory foam with added cooling properties.
Serta charges an additional $300 for its “Cooling Upgrade,” $600 for its “Max Cooling Upgrade,” and $1,000 for its “Max Cooling & Pressure Relief Upgrade.” Saatva won’t charge you extra for these things. All of our mattresses, including our Memory Foam Hybrid, feature best-in-class cooling and pressure relief properties without any additional cost.
3. Home trial
All new mattresses have a break-in period. With the Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid, you get 365 nights to try the mattress at home and see if it’s right for you. If you’re not fully satisfied, you can exchange or return the mattress for a $99 processing fee.
When purchased directly from Serta’s website, the iComfort Hybrid comes with a 120-night home trial and free returns and exchanges. Third-party retailers will have a different home trial policy, however.
For example, Macy’s, which sells Serta mattresses, offers a 120-night home trial but charges a $99 pickup fee and a 15% preference return fee for exchanges and returns. If you’re not happy with your mattress after your 120 nights, you can receive a one-time credit (minus fees) toward a new mattress of equal or greater value.
4. Delivery and setup
Saatva offers free white glove delivery, setup, and removal of your old mattress with all mattress purchases.
Serta offers free delivery when you buy a mattress directly from their website, but this doesn’t include setup or removal of your old mattress. You can upgrade to white glove delivery for a non-refundable $150 fee. If you buy the Serta iComfort Hybrid from a third-party retailer, you may get charged for delivery.
5. Warranty
Another factor to consider when purchasing a new mattress is the warranty. Saatva and Serta differ in their warranty policies.
The Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid comes with a “friends for life” lifetime warranty. The Serta iComfort Hybrid comes with a 10-year limited warranty when you purchase it directly from their website. If you buy one of their mattresses from a third-party retailer, it may come with a different warranty.
6. Cost
How does Saatva vs. Serta compare when it comes to cost? As of this writing, a queen-size Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid costs $1,795.
The Serta iComfort Hybrid starts at $1,599 for a queen and goes all the way up to $2,599 for a queen when you add the cooling and pressure relief upgrades. Prices may vary if you buy this mattress from a third-party retailer.
With Saatva, you don’t have to pay extra for cooling or pressure relief features. They’re the standard in every Memory Foam Hybrid. Plus, we only sell our products through our website, saatva.com, and at our Viewing Rooms across the country, so pricing doesn’t vary. You also get free white glove delivery and setup, a 365-night home trial, and a lifetime warranty.
7. Customer satisfaction
Any mattress brand (including ours) will tout its positive customer reviews and high star ratings. But if you really want a view into customer satisfaction, look to independent third-party sources.
One such source is the Better Business Bureau (BBB). According to the BBB’s website, Serta, which is unaccredited, has an F rating from the BBB, a 1.56/5-star customer rating, and has received more than 120 complaints in the last three years.
Saatva is BBB accredited, with a customer rating of 4.7/5 stars. The BBB gives the business an A+ rating, which is a measure of how the company interacts with customers when it comes to complaints.
That’s no surprise when you consider that Saatva’s customer service representatives are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, every day of the year, by phone, online chat, and email.
FAQs
What are the most important features to consider when comparing Saatva vs. Serta mattresses?
There are a few key features to consider when comparing Serta vs. Saatva. These include lumbar support and cooling features, home trial, delivery, warranty, and customer satisfaction. All of these can play a role in how happy you’ll be with your purchase.
How do I choose the best mattress for me?
To choose the best mattress for you, start by deciding on a mattress type. Innerspring, hybrid, memory foam, and latex are the most popular options, and the one that’s right for you comes down to personal preference and budget.
Innerspring mattresses tend to be the least expensive, while latex mattresses are some of the most expensive on the market. If you prefer a bouncier feel to your mattress, then you’ll probably like innerspring; if you like the feeling of sinking in, then memory foam may be right for you. A hybrid mattress is a good middle ground.
Then, figure out which firmness level is ideal for your sleep position. Side sleepers do best on softer mattresses, back sleepers do best on medium-firm mattresses, and stomach sleepers do best on firm mattresses. Body type and weight can also affect your mattress firmness choice. Those with larger bodies should opt for firmer mattresses.
Before you buy a new bed, you’ll also want to read the fine print. It’s worth taking the time to understand what else you’re signing up for when it comes to fine-print policies like delivery, home trial, returns, and warranty.
How long does a good mattress usually last?
The average lifespan of a mattress is seven to 10 years. However, some mattress types last longer than others. Innerspring mattresses tend to have shorter lifespans than hybrid, memory foam, and latex mattresses. Those mattresses can last for 10, 15, or more years if they’re made with high-quality materials. The higher the quality of the materials used in the mattress, the more durable the mattress will be.
How much does a good mattress usually cost?
Mattress prices can range anywhere from $200 to $20,000. In general, you can get a high-quality mattress in the range of $1,000 to $3,500. Innerspring mattresses tend to be on the lower end of that range, while hybrid, memory foam, and latex mattresses are usually more expensive.
