Price tags for mattresses can range from $200 to $20,000 (or more!). This can make it difficult to figure out how much you really need to spend to get a quality product.
If you’re in the market for a new mattress—and are looking for a luxury mattress more specifically—you might be wondering: Are the most expensive mattresses actually worth it?
Here at Saatva, we believe that a high-quality mattress doesn’t have to come with an astronomical price tag. Keep reading to learn more about the most expensive mattresses and how Saatva compares so you can decide which mattress is right for you.
Most expensive mattress brands
Generally, the most expensive mattresses come from legacy brands that have been around since as far back as the 1800s. These companies usually hail from Europe and have only recently expanded into the US market.
The most expensive mattress brands include:
Hästens
Hästens is a Swedish company that’s been around since 1852. They started out making saddles for horses, but after cars cut down on the need for horses as transportation, the company pivoted to making mattresses using horsehair instead.
Hästens’ mattresses range in price from around $13,000 to close to $400,000 for a queen. Their mattresses all feature an innerspring coil base made of Swedish steel and are constructed without any foams in the comfort layers.
Alternatively, the brand uses natural materials like cotton, wool, flax, and ethically-sourced horsehair. The brand claims horsehair is hypoallergenic and has antimicrobial and antifungal properties.
A European company, Hästens has only sold its mattresses in the US for the last couple of decades. Hästens’ mattresses are available for purchase in about 30 showrooms across North America. All of the mattresses are constructed by hand at the company’s factory in Sweden.
Duxiana
Duxiana is another Swedish company. A family-owned business, Duxiana has been selling mattresses in Sweden since 1926. Duxiana expanded to the US and the rest of Europe in the 1980s and is now available at 28 stores in North America.
Duxiana offers a range of innerspring mattresses that start at around $6,000 and go up to about $14,000 for a queen. Their mattresses have a two-layer continuous coil design made from Swedish steel that provides lumbar support and contours to the body. All of Duxiana’s mattresses also come with a replaceable cotton-covered latex pad for added comfort.
Vispring
Vispring is a British mattress company that was founded in 1901. They made a name for themselves in the early 1900s by outfitting ocean liners like the Titanic with their mattresses. Now the brand is available in more than 50 countries in over 500 stores.
Vispring offers three comfort collections, with the cheapest mattress starting at around $4,500 for a queen and the most expensive mattress starting at around $71,000 for a queen.
All of the mattresses have an innerspring coil base (the lower-end models have one layer of coils, while the higher-end models have two or three layers of coils). The mattresses also contain materials like horsehair, silk, cashmere, and fleece, depending on the model.
Kluft
Kluft is an American mattress manufacturer that was founded in 2003 by Earl Kluft, a third-generation mattress maker. Currently, their mattresses are available at Bloomingdale’s. Prices range anywhere from around $6,500 to about $30,000 for a queen.
Kluft mattresses are hand-assembled and contain a pocketed coil system along with natural materials, like cashmere, horsehair, wool, and organic cotton.
Hypnos
Hypnos is a British mattress company that was founded in 1904. The company holds a Royal Warrant to supply the Royal Family with mattresses and beds in all of the Royal residences, including Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle.
Hypnos is available at 22 retailers in the United States. Their mattresses contain an innerspring base along with natural materials, like latex, horsehair, and wool. Prices range from about $6,000 up to $12,000 for a queen.
Savoir
Savoir is also a British mattress company. They’ve been around since 1905. Their beds were originally created for The Savoy Hotel in London, where the likes of Sir Winston Churchill and Marilyn Monroe slept on them. Now Savoir has 15 showrooms across the globe, including one in the US (in New York City).
Savoir’s mattresses are made with a pocketed coil spring base and also include natural materials, like horsehair, cotton, and wool. Prices range from about $7,000 to $17,000 for a queen.
Why do the most expensive mattresses cost so much?
The most expensive mattresses come with such hefty price tags for a variety of reasons. For starters, part of it has to do with the cost of the materials. Things like cashmere and horsehair simply cost more money than other materials.
Part of it also has to do with the manufacturing costs. The most expensive mattresses are usually made-to-order at the company’s factory and often require the skill of a few qualified people to make them by hand.
Some of the most expensive mattress brands claim their beds can take over 100 hours to complete. Plus, many of these beds are made exclusively in Europe and then shipped to the US.
There’s also the fact that many of the most expensive mattress brands carry an air of prestige and come with a storied history, which allows them to charge such high prices. Essentially, you’re paying for the brand name, regardless of whether the quality is any good.
Are the most expensive mattresses good?
The more expensive a mattress is (up to a point), the better the materials and the longer you can expect it to last. But the correlation between quality and price ends once you get beyond a few thousand dollars.
Keep in mind that there’s no research showing you can get better sleep on a $20,000 mattress than you can on a $2,000 mattress. And there’s also no guarantee a mattress that costs you tens of thousands of dollars will last you any longer than a mattress that costs you a few grand.
What’s more, it’s possible to get many of the qualities of the most expensive mattresses at a much more affordable price—if you know where to look. In fact, the most expensive mattresses all share a few common qualities you can find in a less expensive bed.
Typically, the most expensive mattresses feature an innerspring base with a variety of natural materials used throughout the mattress. The most expensive mattresses are also almost always made-to-order and handcrafted by a team of skilled professionals.
Finally, the most expensive mattress brands usually offer white glove delivery and a long warranty when you purchase from them.
You can find all of these features—and more—at Saatva, without the premium price tag.
Saatva vs. Hästens and other expensive mattress brands
Saatva offers a wide range of luxury mattresses made with premium materials for significantly less money than you’d spend shopping at a brand like Hästens or Duxiana.
Our mattress that’s closest to the most expensive mattresses is the
America’s best-selling online luxury innerspring
This hybrid innerspring mattress is available in three comfort options to suit every sleep style and has a plush Euro pillow top for cushioned comfort, patented Lumbar Zone® Technology for healthy spinal alignment, and a dual-coil design for maximum durability and excellent airflow.
Here’s how the Saatva Classic compares to the most expensive mattresses:
Materials
Sure, none of our mattresses feature horsehair or cashmere, but that doesn’t mean the materials we use aren’t luxurious or good for your sleep. All of the materials inside the Saatva Classic are incredibly comfortable, supportive, and durable and comply with the highest standards of health and environmental safety.
These materials include naturally soft, breathable, and hypoallergenic organic cotton in the cover; CertiPUR-US®-certified, high-density memory foam for pressure point relief in the comfort layer; and durable recycled tempered steel coils in the base. The mattress is also finished with our exclusive Guardin® botanical antimicrobial treatment to inhibit the growth of mold, mildew, and bacteria.
Made-to-order manufacturing
Similarly to the most expensive mattress brands, we handcraft all of our mattresses. Saatva’s process combines the best of old-fashioned hand craftsmanship with modern materials and technologies.
Here’s where things differ: Some of the most expensive mattress brands, like Vispring and Hästens, make their mattresses exclusively in Europe and then ship them to the United States. At Saatva, all of our mattresses are made in America, at one of our 19 US factories. On average, our mattresses travel less than 100 miles from the factory to your home, lowering our carbon footprint.
Ease of purchase
Because of our online business model, you can buy from Saatva anytime, anywhere. To purchase a $20,000 mattress, on the other hand, you need to go in person to one of the company’s showrooms. That means you’re limited to shopping at places where these brands have a physical presence. Savoir, for example, only has one showroom in the US.
White glove delivery
Once your mattress is ready, we offer free white glove delivery. Some of the most expensive mattress brands charge you an extra fee (on top of an already large bill) for this service. We also set your bed up in the room of your choice and even take away your old mattress—all for no additional charge.
Home trial
Every Saatva mattress comes with a 365-night home trial. That’s right—you get to try any of our mattresses for an entire year to make sure it’s right for you. Many of the most expensive mattress brands don’t give you a home trial.
If you’re investing a few thousand dollars (or more!) into a new mattress, we believe you should be able to take it for a test drive first. If you’re not happy with your Saatva mattress within the home trial period, you can return or exchange it for a $99 processing fee.
Warranty
We stand by the quality of our mattresses, which is why we offer a lifetime warranty. If there’s ever an issue with a Saatva mattress, we’ll make it right. The most expensive mattresses usually come with a 20- to 30-year warranty, for comparison. Hästens, for example, offers a 25-year warranty, while Duxiana’s mattresses come with a 20-year warranty and Vispring mattresses come with a 30-year warranty.
Cost
How much will a handcrafted hybrid innerspring mattress with free white glove delivery, a 365-night home trial, and a lifetime warranty set you back? As of this writing, the Saatva Classic costs $1,995 for a queen.
The bottom line: At Saatva, you can get a made-to-order mattress containing high-quality materials for significantly less money than you’d spend with the most expensive mattress brands. Take our mattress quiz to find your perfect match.
