Saatva Classic 11.5 vs. 14.5: What’s the Difference?
Written by John-Manuel Andriote
The Saatva Classic hybrid innerspring mattress offers identical comfort and durability in two profiles: 11.5-inch and 14.5-inch. The main difference is coil height. The 11.5-inch fits standard sheets and adjustable bases, while the 14.5-inch requires deep-pocket sheets, includes side handles, and feels more substantial for heavier sleepers.
The Saatva Classic is our bestselling mattress for good reason. With its hybrid innerspring design, plush comfort layers, and handcrafted durability, it delivers the luxury sleep experience people expect from Saatva.
One of the questions we hear most often from customers is about the mattress height: Should I choose the 11.5-inch or the 14.5-inch Saatva Classic?
On the surface, the two options look very similar. Both are made with the same premium materials, both provide the same comfort and support, and both carry the same industry-leading warranty.
Yet, there are some practical differences to keep in mind before you decide which height will suit your bedroom, your body, and your lifestyle best.

Saatva Classic 11.5 vs 14.5: What’s the difference?
At its core, the Saatva Classic is an innerspring mattress available in two profiles: 11.5 inches and 14.5 inches. The main difference comes down to the height of the coil unit inside the mattress.
- In the 14.5-inch model, we add two extra turns to the lower coil unit, which increases the total height by three inches.
- In the 11.5-inch model, the coil system is slightly shorter but functions exactly the same in terms of comfort, durability, and support.
That’s important to highlight: Whether you choose the taller or the shorter model, you’re not compromising on sleep quality. The materials, performance, and long-term durability remain identical.
The choice really comes down to personal preference and practical considerations. Do you like the look and feel of a higher-profile mattress, or do you prefer sleeping closer to the ground on a lower one?
Key differences to consider
While the comfort is the same, there are a few notable differences between the two profiles that may influence your decision:
1. Sheet compatibility
- The 11.5-inch Saatva Classic fits standard pocket sheets.
- The 14.5-inch model requires deep pocket sheets—such as our Organic Sateen Sheet Set—to ensure a secure fit.
2. Handles
- The 14.5-inch Saatva Classic has handles sewn onto the sides to help shift or rotate the mattress. Keep in mind, however, that these are not designed for lifting the full weight of the bed.
- The 11.5-inch model doesn’t include handles, so it needs to be lifted from underneath if moved.
3. Adjustable base compatibility
- The 11.5-inch Saatva Classic works perfectly with adjustable bed frames.
- The 14.5-inch model is not compatible with adjustable bases due to the thicker, more rigid coil system.
FAQs
Is the Saatva Classic good for a heavy person?
Yes. In general, a mattress 12 inches or thicker tends to perform better for people with larger body sizes. Thicker mattresses provide more layers and materials, which offer additional support and pressure relief.
That means less sinking and more consistent comfort throughout the night. Both heights of the Saatva Classic will work for heavier sleepers, but the 14.5-inch profile often feels more substantial and supportive.
How does the height of the Saatva Classic affect its comfort and support?
Mattress height itself isn’t what determines comfort—it’s more about the construction inside. Since both Saatva Classic models use the same materials and layers, the difference in feel is subtle. What matters most is your body size, sleep style, and bedroom setup.
- If you’re taller or heavier, you may appreciate the extra presence of the 14.5-inch.
- If you prefer sleeping closer to the ground, or want easier access in and out of bed, the 11.5-inch is a great fit.
Think of mattress height as a matter of convenience and aesthetics rather than performance.
Is there a price difference between the two heights?
There’s a modest price difference between the 11.5-inch and 14.5-inch Saatva Classic. Thicker mattresses generally cost a little more because they require more material and additional construction steps. But the difference isn’t dramatic—it really comes down to what height feels right to you.
Which height is more suitable for adjustable bed frames?
This is an important distinction. If you use or plan to buy an adjustable base, the 11.5-inch Saatva Classic is the only option compatible with it. Its coil unit is slightly shorter and more flexible, allowing the mattress to bend and move with the base. The 14.5-inch, with its thicker coil system, is too rigid for that kind of movement.
Choosing the mattress height that’s right for you
At the end of the day, choosing between the Saatva Classic 11.5 and 14.5 is less about sleep quality and more about lifestyle. Both offer the same handcrafted comfort and long-lasting durability.
- Choose the 11.5-inch if: You want a lower bed profile, use standard sheets, or plan to pair your mattress with an adjustable base.
- Choose the 14.5-inch if: You like the look and feel of a taller bed, want a little extra heft in your mattress, or don’t mind buying deep pocket sheets.
No matter which height you choose, you’re investing in Saatva’s signature Classic comfort—built to last, designed for all-night support, and crafted for years of restful sleep.
