How to Use Pantone’s 2023 Color of the Year in the Bedroom

Whether you follow trends or not, you likely know that colors continually come and go within the interior design world. One such company that predicts these color trends is Pantone. They’re known for their “Pantone Matching System,” a handy standardized color-matching system that’s used throughout the world and is considered the holy grail for designers. With each hue numbered and named, it makes matching a cinch, whether one is designing an interior space or a magazine layout.

Annually, Pantone picks their much-awaited “Color of the Year,” a forecast of the color they think will be most popular in the coming year and capture the current feel of where society is headed. The colors for the last couple of years have become increasingly bolder, leading to the Pantone Color of the Year 2023: Viva Magenta.

This daring shade of red, chosen after meticulous color trend research, is, according to Pantone, “brave and fearless, a pulsating color whose exuberance promotes a joyous and optimistic celebration, writing a new narrative.”

The 2023 Pantone Color of the Year may seem daunting to use in your interiors—particularly in your bedroom—but it can absolutely be done. It’s a beautiful color that will bring instant personality to your sleeping space—and we’ll show you how to do it.

Everything you need to know about the Pantone 2023 Color of the Year

The hue “Viva Magenta” was chosen as a result of trend forecasting. Over the past few years, colors have nodded more and more to nature, with shades of blue and green dominating spaces. For 2023, Pantone chose a more vivid color drawn from the outdoors, calling it “a shade rooted in nature descending from the red family and expressive of a new signal of strength.” It also reinforces the fact that colors are now trending in a bolder direction.

“I love most colors, and this one is no exception,” says Gideon Mendelson, founder and creative director of Mendelson Group. “It’s a little surprising because it’s so bold, but I hope people have the courage to try and use it. It seems that white rooms are becoming less popular these days. I’m a fan of color in a home, so this is great news to me.”

How to incorporate Pantone’s 2023 Color of the Year into the bedroom

Focus on accessories

While many designers recommend using soothing hues in a bedroom, you can choose a bold palette for your space and incorporate Viva Magenta throughout. If you don’t want this color to overwhelm the visuals in your bedroom, Mendelson recommends weaving it in through accessories, textiles, or small accents like throw pillows or vases. This will still “incorporate color and drama into a bedroom space,” he says.

Embrace stripes

Viva Magenta is the perfect shade for setting off other colors. It works as a small accent border in a bedroom, banding on roman shades, a band around crown molding, and as a stripe in your classic hotel linens, says Mendelson. This way, the color can stand out amid neutrals if that’s a look you prefer.

Showcase the headboard

Mendelson recommends using the hue to get creative with your headboard, something that he achieved in one of his own projects. He says that in this bedroom space, his team used a bold magenta color to create a backdrop and frame for the bed, which serves as a unique focal point.

Go big and bold

If you’re absolutely in love with Viva Magenta, don’t shy away from making it an attention-grabbing and glamorous touch in your bedroom. “If you’re looking to make a real statement, a lacquered room in this color would be a great way to do so,” Mendelson says. “Pair it with ambers, gold, and camel colors to make the room pop.”
