Breus<\/a>, PhD, clinical psychologist and fellow of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, explains in a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.saatva-node-stage.tsc-starts-coding.com\/blog\/red-light-therapy-and-sleep\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">previous Saatva article on red light therapy<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/scied.ucar.edu\/learning-zone\/atmosphere\/visible-light\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Red light<\/a>&nbsp;is low frequency (around 430 terahertz) and long wavelength (around 700 nanometers);&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hindawi.com\/journals\/ijp\/2015\/916838\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">according to the Cleveland Clinic,<\/a>&nbsp;\u201cRed light therapy is thought to work on the \u2018power plant\u2019 of your body\u2019s cells called mitochondria.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Basically, the mitochondria is where the cell\u2019s energy is created; as cells absorb the red light, they generate more energy and work more efficiently (a process known as&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/helight.com\/collections\/red-light-therapy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">photobiomodulation<\/a>, which is similar to photosynthesis in plants).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This may promote a variety of health benefits, including&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5167494\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">improved injury recovery<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hindawi.com\/journals\/ijp\/2015\/916838\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">improved wound healing and cellular repair<\/a>, and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5000419\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reduced pain and inflammation<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because of the way red light therapy works, it&#8217;s also become a go-to treatment in the skincare world, potentially offering&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3926176\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">anti-aging benefits<\/a>&nbsp;like boosting collagen production and treating fine lines and wrinkles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Red light therapy also has the potential to support better sleep as the red light wavelengths are believed to stimulate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.saatva-node-stage.tsc-starts-coding.com\/blog\/everything-you-need-to-know-about-melatonin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">melatonin<\/a>\u2014aka the sleep hormone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At-home red light therapy devices come in all shapes and sizes; for example, if you\u2019re trying to use red light therapy for sleep, then you might opt for a red light lamp or eye mask.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Red light therapy has the potential to support better sleep as the red light wavelengths are believed to stimulate melatonin\u2014aka the sleep hormone.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re looking to manage pain or inflammation, then you might go for a blanket. There are even red light devices you can use on your scalp that claim to stimulate hair growth!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One important thing to note is that at-home red light devices use&nbsp;<em>actual<\/em>&nbsp;red light; a bulb that\u2019s tinted red isn\u2019t the same thing\u2014and isn\u2019t going to give the same effect. \u201cThis is not a red-tinted bulb with a full spectrum,\u201d Breus tells us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Do red light therapy devices work?&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Do red light therapy devices work\u2014and, more specifically, do they work for sleep?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While there aren\u2019t a ton of studies on how red light influences sleep, there&nbsp;<em>is<\/em>&nbsp;research that links red light therapy to getting better Z\u2019s.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3499892\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">One study from the&nbsp;<em>Journal of Athletic Training<\/em><\/a>, which studied female athletes over a two-week period, found that athletes who received 30 minutes of red light therapy each night had improved sleep, increased levels of melatonin, and better endurance performance when compared to athletes who didn\u2019t receive the red light treatment.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6506010\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">study from&nbsp;<em>Nature and Science of Sleep<\/em><\/a>&nbsp;found that red light therapy can help reduce \u201csleep inertia\u201d\u2014that groggy feeling you get when you first wake up.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While there definitely needs to be more research into red light and sleep, the research that exists is promising. After reading the Helight Sleep reviews and description, I was pretty excited to give it a whirl. But what, exactly, is it?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Helight Sleep is a red light therapy device inspired by&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/spinoff.nasa.gov\/Spinoff2019\/cg_8.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NASA protocols<\/a>&nbsp;for helping&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.saatva-node-stage.tsc-starts-coding.com\/blog\/sleeping-in-space\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">astronauts get better sleep<\/a>&nbsp;and regulate their circadian rhythms while traveling in space.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To mimic natural sunlight, NASA exposes astronauts to different types of light at different times of the day: blue in the morning, white in the daytime hours, and (you guessed it) red at night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Helight Sleep emits pure red light at a wavelength of 630 nanometers for 14 minutes. At the 14-minute mark, the light starts to fade\u2014and when the cycle hits 28 minutes, the device will shut off automatically.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This patented protocol was designed (after three full years of research and development!) to help you fall asleep faster and get better, more restorative sleep.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to use Helight Sleep&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Helight Sleep is super easy to use; all you have to do is press the red button on the side of the small, circular device to start the timed protocol. For best results:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Let it charge.&nbsp;<\/strong>When you get the Helight Sleep, plug it into the USB charger and let it fully charge (which takes about three hours). This will give you plenty of nights of use. (If you want to leave it plugged in while you use it, that\u2019s fine too!)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Turn off all light sources<\/strong>. Helight Sleep should be the only light source in your bedroom.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Place Helight Sleep near your bed<\/strong>. For best results, you\u2019ll want to have Helight Sleep close to your body and eyes\u2014for example, on your nightstand.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Get in your usual sleep position<\/strong>. There\u2019s no need to switch up your&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.saatva-node-stage.tsc-starts-coding.com\/blog\/sleeping-positions-pros-cons\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sleep position<\/a>&nbsp;to use Helight Sleep; just get in your usual snooze position and the red light will pass through your eyelids and give your brain the signal that it\u2019s time to sleep.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Give it time<\/strong>. When it comes to how long Helight Sleep takes to work, there\u2019s no one-size-fits-all solution; some people will experience benefits after a few days\u2014while others will need about 21 days to adapt.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>After 14 minutes, the light intensity will gradually fade and will turn completely off after 28 minutes. Its portable design and integrated battery make it perfect for travel, curbing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.saatva-node-stage.tsc-starts-coding.com\/blog\/jet-lag-cures\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">jet lag<\/a> by helping reduce the period of adaptation to a new time zone. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although some people need about 21 days to adapt and regulate their sleep, you may feel positive effects from the first week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"isPasted\">My Helight Sleep review&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>What did I think about the Helight Sleep?&nbsp;If I could sum it up in two words: LOVED IT.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I went into this process with a healthy dose of skepticism. But within a few days, I could already feel a difference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My biggest sleep challenge, hands down, is&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.saatva-node-stage.tsc-starts-coding.com\/blog\/how-long-should-it-take-to-fall-asleep\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">falling asleep<\/a>. I toss, I turn, and I often find myself checking my phone to find that an hour (or two!) has passed and I\u2019m still wide awake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first few nights of using the Helight Sleep, I used it twice; I went through the 28-minute cycle\u2014and, since I was still awake, I hit the button and went through it again.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But after about a week, I was asleep before the Helight Sleep turned itself completely off, which means I was asleep within 28 minutes of my head hitting the pillow. That&#8217;s definitely not the norm for me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I also noticed on my sleep tracker that my restorative sleep inched up a bit as I used my Helight Sleep\u2014for a total of about 5%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>What did I think about the Helight Sleep?&nbsp;If I could sum it up in two words: LOVED IT. But aside from the fact that I\u2019m falling asleep faster and getting deeper sleep, there are other things I really like about the Helight Sleep.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I love how small and compact it is; I\u2019m about to leave for a trip to visit family, and I can easily throw this in my purse or backpack. (Since it helps to regulate circadian rhythms, it should also help with jet lag as I adjust to the new time zone!)&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I also really love the \u201chands off\u201d design; Once I hit the button, all I have to worry about is falling asleep\u2014and I won\u2019t wake up in the middle of the night to a red glow in my bedroom (which, to me, feels a bit like a horror movie).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Arguably my favorite feature of the Helight Sleep (outside of the results, of course)? It\u2019s a standalone device.&nbsp;There\u2019s no app, there\u2019s nothing to download, and after the initial cost of the Helight Sleep (which is $139), there\u2019s nothing to pay for\u2014which, in today\u2019s world, where seemingly everything has a monthly subscription fee attached to it, was really refreshing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The bottom line on at-home red light therapy devices&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Bottom line? I think it\u2019s safe to say that Helight Sleep has made me an official red light therapy convert.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While research on red light therapy for sleep is limited\u2014and there&#8217;s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.frontiersin.org\/journals\/psychiatry\/articles\/10.3389\/fpsyt.2023.1200350\/full\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">some research that red light therapy may actually increase alertness<\/a>&nbsp;(which is the opposite of what you want when you\u2019re trying to sleep)\u2014from my experience, it\u2019s definitely something that\u2019s worth a try.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, if you want to fall asleep faster, get better sleep, and do so in a way that\u2019s easy, straightforward, and requires minimal fuss?
