They range from physical to mental.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While gardening provides a number of health benefits for everyone, says Haag, even just getting out into the sunlight can increase&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.saatva-node-stage.tsc-starts-coding.com\/blog\/vitamin-deficiency-disrupting-sleep\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">vitamin D levels<\/a>&nbsp;and decrease&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.saatva-node-stage.tsc-starts-coding.com\/blog\/sleep-high-blood-pressure\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">blood pressure<\/a>, which has been proven through&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5480134\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">scientific study<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also, growing all those fruits and vegetables at home increases the likelihood you\u2019ll enjoy some&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.saatva-node-stage.tsc-starts-coding.com\/blog\/nutrition-and-sleep\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">nutritious eats<\/a>, notes Haag. First of all,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6334070\/#R35\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">research<\/a>&nbsp;has shown that gardening has been associated with a lower prevalence of dementia and lower stress.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Plus, for people who visit communal gardens, the social interactions with a common ground can provide the starting point for conversations and easy topics for people suffering from anxiety or limited social time, adds Haag.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cVisiting garden centers and gathering supplies can also provide a low-stakes opportunity to venture into new spaces and make new connections,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As for sleep, outdoor gardening is a perfect way to tire ourselves out physically.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOne of the biggest contributors to getting a good night\u2019s sleep is being physically tired, and the low-impact exercise of gardening combined with the \u2018one more thing\u2019 nature of gardening helps us work until our bodies are tired,&#8221; says Haag. &#8220;Combined with a better sleep routine at night, spending time gardening can deliver a one-two punch to help us get better sleep.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Additionally, Haag explains that there is&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.saatva-node-stage.tsc-starts-coding.com\/blog\/blue-light-sleep\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">blue light<\/a>&nbsp;at play in gardening. While the blue light from cell phones and other devices can disrupt our circadian rhythms at night, that&#8217;s only half the story. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe same blue light [from the sun] that tells our bodies to wake up and be energized is part of the spectrum of light that plants use to grow, and the same light that tells plants to close up for the night tells our bodies it\u2019s time to get ready for sleep,\u201d says Haag.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-to-become-a-gardener\">How to become a gardener<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Haag shares his top tips for beginning gardeners if you\u2019d like to harness those positive health benefits: &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Buy what you want to use and buy more than you think you want. Haag says this approach can account for the \u201ctrial run\u201d nature of gardening that many beginners encounter. Buying more than you think you want will cover all your bases for your gardening essentials.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Accept imperfection. \u201cStarting out we all make mistakes, and figuring out how much sunlight plants like, how much water is enough, or even which soil to use can be a lot of trial and error,\u201d Haag says.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Know that learning will take time. \u201cDon&#8217;t get discouraged, and don&#8217;t try to take shortcuts,&#8221; says Haag. &#8220;It\u2019s a learning process, and despite what you might believe, a green thumb is earned over time, not purchased in a garden center. It\u2019s okay to have a plant die while you figure out how to care for it.
