Higher quality materials, such as organic materials or natural fibers, have heftier costs and naturally increase the cost of the mattress. The type of mattress matters too\u2014whether it\u2019s a traditional&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.saatva-node-stage.tsc-starts-coding.com\/blog\/innerspring-mattress-guide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">innerspring mattress<\/a>, or a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.saatva-node-stage.tsc-starts-coding.com\/blog\/memory-foam-mattress-guide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">memory foam<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.saatva-node-stage.tsc-starts-coding.com\/mattresses\/saatva-latex-hybrid\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">hybrid<\/a>, gel, or&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.saatva-node-stage.tsc-starts-coding.com\/blog\/latex-mattress-guide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">latex mattress<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One component of an innerspring mattress\u2019s cost is whether it has individually wrapped coils that increase its comfort level\u2014and its price tag. First of all, the price of steel used to make the coils has increased by 16% between 2017-2022. Foam prices also went up during the pandemic, and there were supply-chain issues. All of these factor into higher mattress prices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Business model&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Another big factor in the price of a mattress is the way in which it\u2019s sold. When you buy from a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.saatva-node-stage.tsc-starts-coding.com\/blog\/saatva-vs-traditional-mattress-stores\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">traditional retail \u201cbrick and mortar\u201d store<\/a>, you\u2019re paying for the store\u2019s overhead expenses like rent and insurance, sales commissions, and other costs of doing business built into the price.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rudzin explains that in this model, each person along the way from the manufacturer to you wants their share of your money. \u201cThe retailer wants their margin,\u201d he says. \u201cThe manufacturer wants their margin.&#8221; This means &#8220;the consumer was getting stuck in the middle,&#8221; says Rudzin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Too many traditional mattress retailers also resorted to gimmicks and tricks to convince customers they were getting a &#8220;deal.&#8221; These include marking up the price and then offering a big discount that actually brings the price back down to what had been the original price to begin with. Another favorite is to sell the same mattress by different brand names or vary the price by store location.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By contrast, direct-to-consumer brands like Saatva are able to offer higher-quality mattresses at lower prices because they sell directly to customers online and don\u2019t have the retail markup the legacy brands do.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Speaking of Saatva\u2019s mattresses, Rudzin says, \u201cIt\u2019s at least as good as any bed that you\u2019ll see on the market in the $3,000 range that we\u2019re selling for $1,600-$1,700.
