It causes pain, functional disability, depression, and sleep disturbances.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In fact, those who deal with&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.saatva-node-stage.tsc-starts-coding.com\/blog\/best-pillow-for-back-and-neck-pain\/\">recurring neck and shoulder pain<\/a>&nbsp;often report troubled sleep. In a 2013 study, 42% of patients with chronic low back pain and chronic neck pain were&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3536352\/\">found to be sleep deprived<\/a>. Another 2013 study noted that among those who have dealt with shoulder pain for three months or longer, an astounding&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S1058274612001449\">81% experienced poor sleep<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These aches and pains might be considered everyday inconveniences, but they can add up to prolonged low-quality sleep.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.imperiumchiropractic.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Tom Tozer<\/a>, chiropractor at Wisconsin&#8217;s Imperium Chiropractic, is here to share his expertise on these areas of the body and offer tips on finally achieving pain-free sleep.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-common-causes-of-neck-and-shoulder-pain\">Common causes of neck and shoulder pain<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to the achiness many of us experience while seated for long periods at our desks, there are several other things that can lead to neck and shoulder pain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When it comes to the neck, Tozer lists injuries like whiplash and sprains and strains, as well as chronic conditions like&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.saatva-node-stage.tsc-starts-coding.com\/blog\/how-to-sleep-better-with-arthritis\/\">arthritis<\/a>. He also cites forward head posture, which is when someone drives their chin forward instead of keeping their spine and head aligned. Meanwhile, a few standard causes of shoulder pain include rotator cuff issues, bursitis, and arthritis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNeck and shoulder pain can come from many different underlying conditions,&#8221; says Tozer. &#8220;For a proper evaluation and diagnosis, it&#8217;s necessary to look at all aspects of someone&#8217;s life.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-to-prevent-neck-and-shoulder-pain-while-you-sleep\">How to prevent neck and shoulder pain while you sleep<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Neck and shoulder pain can make it hard to fall and stay asleep. It can also cause you to experience&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/saatva-node-stage.tsc-starts-coding.com\/blog\/numbness-in-hands-while-sleeping\/\">numbness in your arms and hands<\/a>, says Tozer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here&#8217;s how to prevent neck and shoulder pain\u2014and wrestling with a pillow as you attempt to find a comfortable&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.saatva-node-stage.tsc-starts-coding.com\/blog\/choosing-the-right-mattress-for-sleep-position\/\">sleeping position<\/a>\u2014and improve the quality of your sleep.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-purchase-the-right-pillow\">Purchase the right pillow<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Although Tozer says that finding the perfect pillow can be \u201cchallenging,&#8221; he believes it&#8217;s an effective way to relieve neck and shoulder pain. That&#8217;s why Tozer says it&#8217;s extremely beneficial to travel with your own pillow if at all possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you&#8217;re staying at a hotel, ask what style of beds they have before you depart. When you&#8217;re on an airplane or in the car, Tozer explains, it&#8217;s important to set the headrest in a proper position and bring along a comfortable neck pillow.
